PRP, KeraLase® and Regenerative Hair Therapy for Hair Loss: What’s the Difference?

If you have been researching treatments for hair thinning or hair loss, you may have come across terms such as PRP, KeraLase®, regenerative hair therapy, growth factors and secretome therapy.

Although these treatments are often discussed together, they are not the same—and the right option depends on the individual.

At Ciani Roots Medical with our two locations in Vacaville ,California and Alamo, California , our approach begins with understanding your hair loss, scalp health, medical history and goals before recommending treatment. In many cases, the most effective strategy may involve combining different therapies as part of a personalized hair restoration plan.

What Is PRP for Hair Loss?

Platelet-Rich Plasma, or PRP, begins with a small blood draw. The blood is processed to concentrate the platelets, which contain naturally occurring growth factors involved in tissue repair and cellular signaling.

The concentrated PRP is then administered through small injections into areas of thinning hair.

PRP may be considered for patients experiencing:

  • Early hair thinning

  • Follicle miniaturization

  • Male or female pattern hair loss

  • Increased shedding

  • Changes in hair density

  • Hair restoration support before or after transplantation

One of the benefits of PRP is that it is derived from the patient's own blood and can be incorporated into a more comprehensive hair restoration program.

What Is KeraLase® Hair Therapy?

KeraLase® Hair Therapy takes a different approach.

KeraLase uses the LASEmd® Ultra laser to create precise microchannels in the scalp. Immediately afterward, KeraFactor® MD is applied to the treated area.

The laser prepares the scalp for topical delivery, allowing the KeraFactor formulation to be incorporated into the treatment.

KeraLase may be used as a stand-alone maintenance treatment or as part of a more comprehensive hair restoration protocol.

At Ciani Roots Medical, it may be combined with therapies such as:

  • PRP

  • Scalp microneedling

  • Medical hair-loss management

  • Compounded topical medications

  • Regenerative hair therapies

What Is Regenerative Hair Therapy?

Regenerative hair therapy is a broader category that uses biological signaling factors to support the environment surrounding the hair follicle.

At Ciani Roots Medical, one regenerative option is a personalized secretome created using cells associated with your own hair follicles.

The process begins with the collection of approximately 50–60 hairs with the follicles intact. The follicles are sent to a specialized laboratory, where cells are processed and used to create a personalized secretome derived from your own biology.

What returns for treatment is not scalp tissue or fat. The personalized secretome contains biological signaling components produced through the laboratory process.

When appropriate, we can combine the personalized secretome with PRP and administer it throughout areas of thinning using small injections similar to the way PRP is delivered.

This allows us to incorporate an additional regenerative component into an individualized hair restoration program.

PRP vs. KeraLase® vs. Regenerative Hair Therapy

Each treatment approaches hair loss differently.

PRP delivers concentrated platelets and growth factors from your own blood directly into areas of thinning.

KeraLase® uses LASEmd Ultra technology to create microchannels in the scalp followed by the application of KeraFactor MD.

Regenerative hair therapy can incorporate personalized biological signaling factors derived from the patient's own collected hair follicles.

Rather than asking which treatment is simply "best," a better question is:

Which treatment—or combination of treatments—is most appropriate for my type of hair loss?

Which Hair Loss Treatment May Be Right for Me?

There is no single hair loss treatment that is appropriate for everyone.

PRP may be considered for patients experiencing early thinning, miniaturization, pattern hair loss or increased shedding.

KeraLase® may be considered for patients interested in a laser-assisted scalp treatment that incorporates KeraFactor MD.

Regenerative hair therapy may be considered for patients who want to explore a more comprehensive regenerative approach using personalized biological therapies.

For some patients, combining treatments may make sense.

The appropriate approach depends on factors such as:

  • The cause of the hair loss

  • The degree of follicle miniaturization

  • Scalp health

  • Age

  • Hormonal changes

  • Medical history

  • Previous treatments

  • Long-term hair restoration goals

Why We Sometimes Combine Hair Restoration Treatments

Hair loss is rarely identical from one person to another.

Two patients may both notice thinning at the crown, but the underlying reason for that thinning may be completely different.

That is why our approach begins with an evaluation rather than automatically recommending one treatment.

At Ciani Roots Medical, our CR Signature Hair Program may incorporate several treatment modalities, including:

  • KeraLase® with LASEmd® Ultra

  • KeraFactor® MD

  • Bio-enhanced PRP

  • Scalp microneedling

  • Compounded medical solutions

  • Medical hair-loss management

  • Regenerative therapies when appropriate

For patients interested in a more advanced regenerative approach, a personalized secretome may also be incorporated into the treatment plan.

The goal is not simply to perform a procedure. It is to determine what is happening with your hair and scalp and which treatment strategy makes sense for you.

Why Early Hair Loss Evaluation Matters

Hair loss can be gradual, and many patients do not notice significant changes until density has already decreased.

Some early signs can include:

  • A widening part

  • Increased scalp visibility

  • A receding hairline

  • Changes around the temples

  • A thinner ponytail

  • Increased shedding in the shower or brush

  • Gradual loss of density at the crown

Having your hair and scalp evaluated earlier can help identify what may be contributing to those changes and allow you to understand your options before thinning becomes more advanced.
